Erection of new memorial for Parish Dead

For a number of months, the Parish Council has been developing plans for a memorial to deceased former parishioners and family members. The plans are now complete, and construction work is finished.

The memorial has been placed on the outside east wall of the Budde Building. In time, the side walk and hill in that location will be extended out to provide a seating and reflection area.  The memorial’s centerpiece is a five-foot, ancient cast iron grave marker from France, donated by Rite and Shep Morris. Marble slabs, for engraving names of the deceased, will be placed on either side of the ancient marker, with all resting on an altar-like rock base.

Initially, the names engraved on the memorial will be those found in the parish death registry, as well as the names of others now found on the plaque in the Seton Center. In the future, the policy for engraving names of the deceased on the marble slabs will be:

The Memorial Wall is for deceased members and individuals who were active members of the St. Vincent de Paul Church family. An active member is a registered member of St. Vincent de Paul Church who participated in the life of the parish. Inclusion extends to the following:

1. Present church members and their immediate family. Immediate family is defined as a member’s spouse (Catholic or non-Catholic), unmarried children
(natural and adopted),step-children, and unmarried grandchildren.

2. Former active members and their spouses, when requested by their families.

3. Others not covered by 1 or 2 may be included upon review by the Parish Council.

The Lenten Regulations are as follows:

FASTING concerns the AMOUNT of food we eat and WHEN we eat it.   ASH WEDNESDAY is a FAST DAY. On that day those who are obliged to fast are allowed one (1) full meal.   Aside from that they are also permitted two (2) smaller meals. For the average person, it means having a full dinner and a light breakfast and a light lunch. But we can arrange eating time as we please.  Obligated by this regulation are those who have completed their 18th birthday and have not yet reached their 59th birthday.  GOOD FRIDAY is also a FAST DAY.

ABSTAINING means doing without something. For Lent it means not eating flesh meat – animals and birds.   ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY are both days of FAST AND ABSTINENCE.   ALL THE FRIDAYS of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE.   The age for no meat is fourteen and up.
